Peace. What is peace? A warm, calm , bright and sunny day. Sitting at the beach (or pool) without a care in the world. No incomplete, passed due assignments, no unpaid bills, fridge fully stocked. Skin in perfect condition, no zits, sun burn etc… Healthy and well, no sickness not even a cough. Obedient children, relaxed parents… Is it all this things? Some of them? Let’s take a look at the dictionary.
Peace: Freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility. Synonyms : quiet – calm – tranquillity – tranquility – stillness.
Well, looks like it’s all of this things. So, is it all this things, each at a time or all at once. Well, I’m sure we can all agree you can’t have everything. So can you really have peace. I mean, there’s always some kind of disturbance around us, almost always. We could choose to ignore the disturbance, shut it out but you can never really get rid of it. For instance, you get your bonus and you’re happy for like a second, before you receive a phone call that your kid crashed the car and you’ll need about double of the said bonus to fix it (This is purely hypothetical of course.)
Thinking about this takes me back to my joy issue. Remember how, this world is not my home. And once you’re done with one trial it’s on to the next one until we finally go to heaven. Well, let’s check out what the Bible says, shall we? There are numerous verses in the Bible that speak about peace. For instance, Galatians 5: 22, our verse of focus. But for this particular post, and for us to see what peace actually means we’re going to look at Psalms 46 : 10 “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth”. We see ‘stillness’ as a synonym of peace. Looking at this verse, I have an answer to the above question. Peace isn’t all the things I mentioned. Neither all of them, nor some of them. It is none of them. Peace is when nothing, absolutely nothing, is going right but you look to God and you are still. Because you know that He is God. Amidst the darkness, in the storm, when you have absolutely nothing. You know that He is God. That is why Paul (in Phillipians 4:7) refers to it as peace that passeth human understanding. When there is absolutely no reason to be at peace. When everything around you screams “CHAOS!”, “PANIC!” , you are able to be still.
A good example is when Jesus calmed the storm. He’s disciples were in a panic, but He was sound asleep. Because He knew His father. His disciples woke Him up and He calmed the storm. (Mark 4:35-40) The truth of the matter is, when you are at peace, you have the power to make even those around experience peace. Just like Jesus calmed that storm, you have the power to calm the storms in your life.
Numbers 6:24-26 “May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you. May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.”
Have a peaceful weekend.
It’s True, there is no life without Peace.
